Today we wrote stories about the first European settlers migrating to New Zealand. We were able to write from the perspective of either the settlers or the Maori people standing on the shore, watching the ships arrival.
Mrs Lunn challenged us to write about our senses to add impact to add impact to our stories. We also tried to use some language specific to boats for example: listing, hull, port, starboard, captain etc.
Here's what we came up with...
Crash. The waves hitting the boat. “I can see land!” the captain screamed. The smell of fresh fish was going through the ship. Salvia is in everybody's mouth. They all held on the wooden rial as the ship was listing to Port. I am so excited to live in a new land.

I saw something. To my surprise a sailing ship was coming towards the beach. I was scared because it was a big canoe. Everyone ran away and I hid behind the flax bushes. We could smell the fish bones sitting on the sand. There was a salty taste in my mouth. I could feel the fear in me. I could see little dinghies coming down from the boat. Some men rowed the dingy on shore. They came on land.I heard a strange language and we were all frightened...

On the ship, I can feel waves lapping against the hull. Land is up ahead. I can smell sea salt. Fish tastes are stuck on my tongue from when I last ate. I can feel the wooden rails that my fingers are wrapped around. We arrive at the shore. Sand shifts beneath my feet.
